How CrushOn AI memory works
CrushOn AI memory is a context window, not a database: the character can only “see” what fits inside it. Once you understand that, most memory complaints become predictable — and fixable. 18+
What the numbers mean
Context size is measured in tokens, and a token is roughly three-quarters of an English word. That makes the tiers concrete:
| Tier | Context | Roughly | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free models | 8K | ~6,000 words | Fine for one sitting; early setup drops by the next session |
| Standard | 16K | ~12,000 words | A multi-session storyline survives with recaps |
| Ultra | Up to 24K | ~18,000 words | Details from 100+ messages back still land weeks later |
Everything in that window competes for space: your messages, the character’s replies, the character card itself and the system prompt. Long replies eat the budget faster than you expect.
Why characters forget — the three causes
- Context overflow. The most common cause. Once the window fills, the oldest content is dropped. The character is not choosing to forget; the text is simply no longer visible to it.
- Free-tier history expiry. Seven days of inactivity and the conversation is deleted outright. This is not a memory problem at all — the chat is gone.
- Compression drift. Older content gets summarised rather than kept verbatim, so a specific detail can survive in general form but lose precision (“they argued about something” rather than what).
Five habits that keep long plots coherent
- Recap deliberately. Every 40–60 messages, have the character summarise the current state of the story in its own words. That refreshes key facts into recent context.
- Put durable facts in the card. Names, relationships and standing arrangements belong in the character definition, which is always loaded — not only in chat.
- Keep replies shorter. Longer AI replies consume the window faster. Adjustable reply length on higher tiers helps here.
- Keep sessions under ~100 messages. Consistency measurably degrades past that regardless of tier.
- Upgrade when you hit the wall. If you are writing multi-week storylines, 16K or 24K is the actual fix — no amount of prompting beats a bigger window.
The honest caveat: CrushOn AI memory is good within a thread and adequate across sessions, but it is not the category leader. If deep cross-session recall is the single thing you care about, Nomi AI does it better.
FAQ
How much memory does CrushOn AI have?
8K on free models, 16K on Standard, up to 24K on Ultra — roughly 6,000 to 18,000 words of working context.
Why does my character forget things?
Usually context overflow, or free-tier history deletion after seven days of inactivity.
Does memory improve on paid plans?
Yes — larger context plus retained history. History retention alone is the main reason many people upgrade.
Can I see how much context is left?
Not precisely. Treat the 100-message guideline as your practical signal that a recap is due.
Does switching models reset memory?
No. Conversation history is preserved when you switch models mid-chat.

Hitting the memory wall?
Standard adds 16K context and persistent history for $5.99/month — usually the cheapest real fix.
