The verdict
CrushOn AI is the best value pick for unfiltered character roleplay, provided you understand the credit system before you pay. The free tier is unusually generous — unlimited messages on base models is not marketing spin — and the model variety is genuinely unmatched in this category. What will annoy you is that advanced models consume credits on top of your subscription, and that the free tier deletes your chat history after a week of inactivity.
Rating: 4.1 / 5. Character library 9.2/10, model variety 8.8/10, NSFW controls 8.5/10, privacy 6.8/10, pricing clarity 6.2/10.
How we tested
We evaluated CrushOn AI across repeated sessions on both desktop browsers and mobile web, using characters from several genres and switching between free, Pro and Ultra model tiers. We focused on five questions: does the character stay in voice over a long session, does memory survive across sessions, does model switching actually change the output, how quickly do credits drain, and what breaks on mobile. Our full methodology is on the editorial policy page.
The character library
This is the platform’s strongest asset and the reason most people stay. The library is community-built and runs into the millions, with new cards published daily across romance, fantasy, anime, sci-fi, horror, slice-of-life and historical settings. Each card carries a name, personality description, opening scenario, example dialogue and — increasingly — a voice preset.
The trade-off of a community library is variance. Popular characters are maintained and refined by their creators; obscure ones can be thin, repetitive or drift out of voice after twenty messages. Expect to spend your first evening sorting good cards from bad ones. The reliable signal is the character’s conversation count: cards with high volume have usually been iterated on repeatedly.
Custom creation goes deep. Beyond name and personality you can set behavioural rules, speech patterns, backstory and example dialogue. In practice, a character with five or more well-written example dialogues holds its voice dramatically better than one defined only by a personality paragraph — this is the single highest-leverage thing you can do as a creator.
Models and the credit system
CrushOn AI exposes 13+ models in three classes: free, Pro and Ultra. Free models (Crushon Mira, GLM 4.6, Crushon Leo) are unlimited on every tier including free. Pro models (DeepSeek V4 Flash, Crushon Mochi V3) consume monthly credits. Ultra models — Claude Opus 4.7, GPT 5.2, Gemini 3.1 Pro, DeepSeek R1, GLM 5.1, the Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 line — consume credits at a higher rate and require a paid plan.
Switching mid-conversation is real and useful. The same character produces noticeably different prose on Claude Opus 4.7 versus GLM 5.1, and being able to swap when a scene changes register is a genuine advantage over single-model competitors.
The catch: credits are the least clear part of the product. Advanced models draw down a monthly allowance even when you are paying for a plan, and a separate Chat Package add-on exists alongside subscriptions rather than replacing them. Budget mentally for credits if you intend to live on Ultra models. We break the numbers down on the pricing page.
Memory and long sessions
Memory scales with tier: 8K on free models, 16K on Standard, up to 24K on Ultra. Concretely, 24K means a character can recall a detail from more than a hundred messages back, which is what makes multi-week storylines possible. Free-tier memory is adequate for a single sitting but will drop early setup by the next session.
Two hard limits matter if you write long scenes: free-tier replies are capped in length (around 225 tokens), and free accounts store roughly 200 messages per character. Sessions under about 100 messages produce the most consistent character behaviour regardless of tier.
Group chat, voice and mobile
Group chat, added as a headline 2026 feature, puts three or four characters in one scene. It works, and it is the feature that most changes how much narrative you can build — ensemble scenes were previously impossible. It is gated at Standard and above.
Voice is text-to-speech rather than conversation: characters read their own messages aloud using one of 40+ presets across nine languages, switchable mid-chat, with up to 30 custom voices on top tiers. There are no live voice or video calls, and no image generation — if either matters to you, CrushOn AI is the wrong platform and you should look at our alternatives list.
On mobile, the web app is responsive and usable, and an Android APK is distributed directly. There is no confirmed native iOS app, so iPhone users are on the mobile web. Cross-device sync works: sessions, memory and characters carry between phone and desktop.
Privacy — the weakest area
CrushOn AI states that chats are private to your account and are not used for training. Those claims are not independently audited, and privacy is the most criticised area in every third-party review we consulted. Nothing here is unusual for the category, but it is worth being deliberate: separate email, no real name, no photos of yourself, and a virtual card if you care about the statement descriptor.
